BMC Sets Up Special Ward in Mumbai for Monkeypox Precautions

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proactively set up a 14-bed ward at SevenHills Hospital in Marol as a precautionary measure against monkeypox, a viral disease causing rashes and flu-like symptoms. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently declared monkeypox as a public health emergency of international concern, prompting global attention and preparedness.

Although no cases of monkeypox have been reported in India so far, the Union Ministry of Health has issued guidelines for managing the disease. Following this, the BMC held a meeting with airport authorities to coordinate efforts to prevent the virus from entering the city. The Airport Health Officer (APHO) department has already started thermal screening of passengers arriving from monkeypox-affected countries.

Key Measures:

  • Special Ward Setup: A 14-bed ward has been established at SevenHills Hospital for the isolation and treatment of suspected monkeypox cases.
  • Airport Screening: Passengers from African countries, where the monkeypox outbreak originated, and other affected regions like Pakistan and Sweden, are being screened at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
  • Preparedness: A health information desk has been set up at the airport to provide guidance and information to travelers. If any passenger is suspected of having monkeypox, they will be immediately transferred to SevenHills Hospital for isolation and further treatment.

The BMC's swift action reflects the city's commitment to public health and preparedness in the face of potential health emergencies. With these measures in place, Mumbai is taking all necessary precautions to prevent the spread of monkeypox and ensure the safety of its residents.
