Doctors Protest Against Government, Defy Supreme Court Deadline in Kolkata

Kolkata Doctors Continue Protests Despite Court Orders
In a dramatic standoff, doctors in Kolkata have defied the Supreme Court's deadline to resume work, insisting that their demands be addressed before they return to duty. The protest, which has stretched for 31 days, remains firm as doctors express dissatisfaction with the government’s response.
Government’s Invitation Rejected
West Bengal's Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, extended an invitation to meet with protesting doctors, offering them a platform for dialogue. However, the doctors refused to meet at Nabanna, the state secretariat, asserting that their demands are clear, and there was no need for a separate meeting. The government's Principal Secretary sent a letter to the doctors asking for 10 representatives to attend, but the protesters reiterated their resolve to stay at the protest site.
Supreme Court's Warning
The Supreme Court had directed doctors to resume work by 5 PM on Tuesday, reminding them that no punitive action would be taken against them if they complied. However, the court warned that continued refusal might lead to disciplinary actions, and the state government would not be restrained from taking necessary steps. The court also emphasized the need for safety measures and basic facilities like toilets for healthcare workers in hospitals.
Doctors Stand Firm, Await Government Action
The protestors have refused to back down, despite the government's overtures. ""We have made our demands clear and have been demonstrating for the past 31 days. Why should we be asked to attend a meeting elsewhere when we are already here?" said one of the protestors. The Supreme Court’s intervention has yet to resolve the deadlock, with both sides holding firm in their positions.
As the situation escalates, all eyes remain on the government’s next move and whether a resolution can be reached without further disruption to medical services in Kolkata.
