Union Health Ministry to Ensure Healthcare Worker Safety

Following the recent assault on a resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare held a meeting with representatives from the FORDA, the Indian Medical Association (IMA), and Resident Doctors' Associations from government medical colleges and hospitals in Delhi. The meeting was aimed at addressing the grave concerns surrounding the safety and security of healthcare workers.

During the discussions, the representatives highlighted the urgent need for robust measures to protect healthcare professionals in their workplaces. They expressed their deep concern over the increasing incidents of violence against doctors and medical staff, which have become a significant issue in recent times.

The Union Health Ministry acknowledged these concerns and emphasized the government's commitment to addressing the situation with the seriousness it deserves. The Ministry informed the representatives that 26 states have already enacted legislation aimed at protecting healthcare workers within their jurisdictions.

The Ministry also announced the creation of a committee dedicated to developing comprehensive strategies to enhance the safety and protection of healthcare professionals nationwide. This committee will include representatives from all relevant stakeholders, including state governments, ensuring a holistic approach to the issue.

The Ministry also appealed to the agitating doctors to resume their duties, highlighting the critical importance of their work, especially in light of the rising cases of dengue and malaria. The government urged the doctors to consider the broader public interest while continuing their essential services.

The formation of this committee marks a significant step towards ensuring the safety and security of healthcare workers, who play a crucial role in maintaining the health and well-being of the nation.
